More than a century of ocean research innovation

The Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences, home to some of the longest-running sets of ocean observations available anywhere in the world, is part of the most innovative institution in the U.S.––Arizona State University. Our researchers leverage a wide variety of vessels and facilities operating in its unique position at the edge of the Sargasso Sea in the North Atlantic to explore the ocean and address critical local and global environmental issues. We attract scientists seeking to collaborate at the leading edge of ocean research and education helping to ensure a thriving future for all.

Dive into our research

Oceans & Climate

Located in the western North Atlantic, we host some of the longest-running oceanographic and atmospheric observation programs documenting ocean warming, changes in ocean chemistry, and long-term ecological shifts.

Marine Life

Our researchers utilize the rich marine environment surrounding Bermuda to study ocean life, conducting fieldwork and a wide array of scientific tools and techniques to better understand what sustains and threatens life.

Science & Society

We are proud to be an active member of Bermuda's community and the global scientific community, dedicated to oceanographic science, education, and improving quality of life.
