ASU Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences

More than a century of ocean research innovation

The Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences, home to some of the longest-running sets of ocean observations available anywhere in the world, is part of the most innovative institution in the U.S.––Arizona State University. Our researchers leverage a wide variety of vessels and facilities operating in its unique position at the edge of the Sargasso Sea in the North Atlantic to explore the ocean and address critical local and global environmental issues. We attract scientists seeking to collaborate at the leading edge of ocean research and education helping to ensure a thriving future for all.

SUSTAINED OBSERVATIONS

Due to our location in the western North Atlantic and our reputation for high-quality scientific measurements and analyses, we host some of the longest-running oceanographic and atmospheric observation programs in the world.

OCEANS & CLIMATE

ASU BIOS's work has contributed to seminal advances in the field of climate research. Our observations and research have documented the warming of the ocean in concert with rising global temperatures, changes in ocean chemistry, and associated long-term changes to the ecology of the ocean.

OCEAN LIFE

Our researchers utilize the rich marine environment surrounding Bermuda to study life in the ocean, conducting fieldwork and deploying a wide array of scientific tools and techniques to better understand what sustains and threatens life.

SCIENCE & SOCIETY

We are proud to be an engaged and conscientious member of both Bermuda's island community and the global scientific community. At the heart of our commitment to oceanographic science and education is a dedication to shared knowledge and an improved quality of life for all.

JOIN US

We invite you to partner with us as we work to acquire the knowledge necessary to address an array of societally relevant scientific issues, while educating the next generation of scientists who will likely face even greater challenges. Stay informed of our progress via our online newsletter Currents or our social media platforms, and consider joining our league of supporters who are helping us achieve our goals through private donations. In 2021 ASU BIOS received its seventh consecutive 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, putting it among only 8% of evaluated charities that have achieved this.
