WHO WE ARE
The Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS) is an independent US non-profit scientific research and educational organization based in Bermuda. For over 120 years BIOS-based researchers and visiting scientists have worked to explore the ocean and address critical local and global environmental issues. In 2021, BIOS merged with the Julie Ann Wrigley Global Futures Laboratory at Arizona State University, joining its mission to help ensure a habitable planet and a future in which well-being is attainable.
SUSTAINED OBSERVATIONS
Due to our location in the western North Atlantic and our reputation for high-quality scientific measurements and analyses, BIOS hosts some of the longest-running oceanographic and atmospheric observation programs in the world.
OCEANS & CLIMATE
BIOS's work has contributed to seminal advances in the field of climate research. BIOS observations and research have documented the warming of the ocean in concert with rising global temperatures, changes in ocean chemistry, and associated long-term changes to the ecology of the ocean.
OCEAN LIFE
BIOS researchers utilize the rich marine environment surrounding Bermuda to study life in the ocean, conducting fieldwork and deploying a wide array of scientific tools and techniques to better understand what sustains and threatens life.
SCIENCE & SOCIETY
BIOS is proud to be an engaged and conscientious member of both Bermuda's island community and the global scientific community. At the heart of our commitment to oceanographic science and education is a dedication to shared knowledge and an improved quality of life for all.
JOIN US
We invite you to partner with us as we work to acquire the knowledge necessary to address an array of societally relevant scientific issues, while educating the next generation of scientists who will likely face even greater challenges. Stay informed of our progress via our online newsletter Currents or our social media platforms, and consider joining BIOS's league of supporters who are helping us achieve our goals through private donations. In 2021 BIOS received its seventh consecutive 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, putting it among only 8% of evaluated charities that have achieved this.
