About the U.K. Associates of BIOS

Extending frontiers for early career marine scientists in the U.K. since 1984

The U.K. Associates of BIOS, a registered charity established in 1984, aims to support marine and atmospheric science students at all stages of their degree at U.K. universities. The hope is that their funding will help undergraduates and graduates achieve their educational goals and successful career paths. Their annual scholarship program contributes towards the costs of attending summer courses and internships at the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (ASU BIOS).

Over 200 students have received support from the U.K. Associates since the founding of their charity and many of their alumni have gone on to distinguished scientific careers. In the past five years (2019 – 2023) they have supported almost 50 students to take part in internships and summer courses, and have contributed over £200,000 towards their costs.

The U.K. Associates of BIOS are financed by corporate and personal donations, notably from The Fishmongers’ Company, who have supported them since inception and AXA XL who have supported a number of annual fully-funded internships.

Each year ASU BIOS invites students from U.K. universities to apply for internships and summer course places and the U.K. Associates of BIOS provides funding to ASU BIOS for U.K. student scholarships. Student selection is rigorous and non-discriminatory and is undertaken by the University Programs team at ASU BIOS who administer the individual scholarships, with the approval of the U.K. Associates of BIOS.

Funding from the U.K. Associates of BIOS allows for fully-funded 12-week internships and for financial assistance for summer course attendees for undergraduates and graduates at all stages of their degrees.

All of the U.K. Associates of BIOS trustees, officers and advisors are unpaid and operating costs are kept to less than 5% of their annual income. The U.K. Associates of BIOS are immensely grateful to corporate funding from Fishmongers’ Company, AXA XL, Convex Group, AXIS Capital and Willis Towers Watson who have provided exemplary scholarships for U.K. university-based students to participate in ASU BIOS courses and internships. Individual donors which include Trustees have given much-valued funds, and many City firms have provided them with meeting facilities and event space.

Summer Courses

ASU BIOS summer courses provide an intensive program of lectures, laboratory and field work, covering a range of subjects. Undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in U.K. colleges or universities are eligible to apply for U.K. Associates of BIOS funding to assist with course fees.

“My experience at BIOS has been pivotal in reaffirming my passion for ocean research and diving, solidifying my determination to pursue these fields further. The comprehensive and hands-on nature of the program provided me with a profound understanding of the intricacies involved in marine exploration.” Luca Bucknall, 2023

Internships

U.K. Associates of BIOS Research Internships run for 12 weeks, giving participants the opportunity to more extensively develop their scientific skills. Students undertake a concentrated and focused research project in subjects ranging from the chemistry of the open oceans to the impacts of temperature and light on coral microorganisms.

"I loved going into work because the workplace environment was very positive and encouraging. I had a range of invaluable experiences such as an opportunity to go on the Atlantic Explorer research vessel and also going to visit Nonsuch Island. It was really nice to feel so welcomed at BIOS and this experience will encourage me to look for similar opportunities in my career." Charlotte Gerrish, 2023

She sat on the main Board of BIOS as a Trustee from 2004-2022; and then was appointed a Trustee of the Arizona State University (ASU) BIOS Advisory Board, with specific responsibilities on its Development Committee, when the two institutions merged. She has a close involvement with several Bermudian organizations, particularly in the areas of the environment and the arts which began while her husband was Governor of Bermuda during 2002-2007. She helped to found Polka Theatre for Children in London in 1979 and, as its Development Director until 2002, was recipient of many arts and business awards for creating innovative and mutually beneficial partnerships. Between 2010-2019 she served on the Board of the Mozartists, a leading U.K. period-instrument orchestra and since 2008, she has been a Director on The Bermuda Society Board.

Chip Cunliffe
Chip Cunliffe joined the U.K. Associates of BIOS Board in 2018 and is currently the Programme and Risk Director of the Ocean Risk and Resilience Action Alliance (ORRAA). Prior to this he spent 10 years working in the insurance industry, identifying ways in which risk transfer mechanisms and finance solutions can be best used to build resilience to ocean related risks. He established AXA’s Ocean Risk Initiative which included developing and launching a Coastal Risk Index to integrate coastal ecosystems into insurance risk models; worked with partners to develop the scientific basis to create a mangrove insurance product; as well as identified insurance pathways to prevent Illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. Chip championed the importance of increasing ocean literacy through AXA XL’s Ocean Education and Ocean Risk Scholarships programs. And when he was Sustainable Development Director at XL Catlin, he helped organise the first Ocean Risk Summit in Bermuda, in May 2018.

Nick Pewter
Nick Pewter joined CelsiusPro, a Swiss insurtech company in 2022 as Business Development Manager, focusing on global parametric and climate risk solutions. Previously, he spent six years at Willis Re, working as a wholesale broker. Before that, Nick was based in Bermuda working as a reinsurance underwriter. He is a BIOS Alumnus, having completed an internship in 1997. He joined the U.K. Associates of BIOS Board in 2018. He was born and educated in Bermuda before he studied at the University of Vermont, graduating with a BS in Community Development and Applied Economics.

Professor Richard Lampitt
Professor Richard Lampitt is an observational biogeochemist at the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) addressing the factors that control the downward flux of material from the top of the ocean into the interior and from there to the seabed. This flux is central to the issue of global warming as it removes a substantial part of the atmospheric carbon dioxide which has been generated by mankind. He has a strong interest in issues of direct societal concern; and in 2012 he established and now leads the Microplastics Research Group at NOC. Plastic pollution may prove to have a seriously damaging effect on the structure and function of ocean ecosystems, although there are many outstanding scientific issues still to be resolved. He has been involved in both the science needed to address this issue and changes to national and global policy to reduce the level of pollution and the damage caused. He has been a Trustee of the U.K. Associates of BIOS Board since 2002.

Suzanne Ferlic Johnson
Suzanne Ferlic Johnson, a Trustee of the U.K. Associates of BIOS Board since 2020, is interested in advancing the private sector’s contribution towards the Sustainable Development Goals, especially with regards to the ocean economy. Suzanne is Senior Advisor to the UN Global Compact and its work to advance a more sustainable ocean economy. In particular, she leads the Ocean Finance work for the UN Global Compact’s Ocean Stewardship Coalition. Suzanne is Senior Advisor to the Lloyd's Register Foundation and sits on the Lloyd's Register Advisory Board. She has wide-ranging experience in the energy sector, having previously worked for energy and water companies in government and regulatory affairs, investor relations and finance. She has also worked in investment management at Schroders where she managed fixed income investing for the European utility sector. Early in her career, Suzanne served as special assistant to Ambassador Jeane Kirkpatrick, former permanent representative from the United States to the United Nations.  She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, a Governor of the Ditchley Foundation, and a member of the William Pitt circle at Chatham House.
